Getting Organized In 2014

Happy New Year! One of your resolutions may be to get your home organized. The problem is you don't know where to begin.  Let me give you a few tips to help get started.

You and your family probably received some great gifts for Christmas. Now is the time to take those clothes out of the closet that are too small or that you are never going to wear again and donate them to a local charity or make a few bucks by having a yard sale or taking the items to a local consignment shop. You can do the same with home decor that
you no longer need and your children's toys. Try making ‘giving away’ a regular habit.

Get a filing cabinet or lock box to safely store documents like tax papers, birth certificates, and other sensitive information which you may need to find in a hurry or do not want to get lost.

Create a chore board listing all of the household duties that need to be completed weekly.
Put each family members name beside a household chore.  The kids will enjoy checking off chores as they complete them. This will also show them how important they are to the family unit.

Purchase fun, stylish bins, baskets and containers.
Bins, baskets are containers are great for storage.  It's an easy way to group "like" items while keeping track of what you already have. It also allows you to eliminate items that no long have a purpose in your home.

Last, but not least, keep everything in its place.
Now that you have come up with a system to get organized, keep things in order by making sure that items are put back in their proper place once you are done using them.  Don't say, " I'll put it away later."  From my personal experience, you will probably forget.
Organization takes time and can seem overwhelming.  Start with one room at a time.  Once you get into the habit of it, life becomes so much easier!
